Flickr Photo Search Optimization Best  Practices

The average web user doesn’t know much about search optimization and will usually enter a person’s name as expected (“kevin leery”) with no quotes or spaces. This makes it very important to tag and label your Flickr photos in the best way possible to ensure that they are found by users searching the service. Kevin McShane proposes best practices for tagging people in photos to maximize search result relevance.

SEO Best Practices to Follow

  • Include the person’s full name in the photo title avoiding common stop words: Kevin Leary – Boston WordPress Meetup
  • Include the person’s full name in the photo description along with a keyword rich description “Kevin Leary talks about WordPress blog optimization and PHP programming best practices.”
  • Tag the photo with the person’s full name Either “kevinleary” or “kevin leary”
  • Tag the photo with the person’s first and last name individually “kevin” and “leery”
  • Use Notes to tag each person in the photo

By following these best practices your Flickr photos have the best chance at showing up high in the search results regardless of search method.
