Boston Review

Challenge

Boston Review needed precise conversion tracking for digital product sales and membership subscriptions on their WooCommerce platform. Their existing setup lacked structured event tracking for key user interactions like email sign-ups, donations, podcast plays, and video engagement, making it impossible to measure content performance or optimize their digital product strategy.

Solution

I designed and implemented a complete tracking architecture through Google Tag Manager:

  • E-commerce Event Tracking: Configured GTM to capture the full WooCommerce purchase funnel including product views, cart actions, checkout steps, and completed transactions with accurate revenue attribution.
  • Custom Event Architecture: Built a structured event tracking system using the Object Action Framework for email sign-ups, donations, podcast listens, and video plays, with each event flowing through GTM to GA4 and ad platforms.
  • BigQuery Data Pipeline: Connected GA4 to BigQuery to establish a data warehouse for advanced analysis of product performance, subscription behavior, and content engagement patterns beyond what the GA4 interface provides.

    Results

  • Accurate Revenue Attribution: Boston Review gained reliable e-commerce data across all digital products and membership tiers for the first time.
  • Actionable Engagement Data: Structured event tracking revealed which content types and formats drove the most sign-ups, donations, and subscriptions.
  • Scalable Reporting Foundation: The BigQuery integration enabled custom reporting and analysis at a depth that standard GA4 reporting cannot support.
